There are far too many myths circulating on the internet and among individuals who attempt to make root canals scary and painful. This could not be farther from the truth. Not only is this type of treatment carried out with careful precision, but most dentists ensure the safety and comfort of each patient before starting the process. Keep reading to learn more about root canals and which three myths it’s time to bust.

Myth: A Root Canal Will Kill Your Tooth

If this were true, there would be no need to perform a root canal. The fact that this procedure is designed to save your tooth from requiring extraction makes this statement completely false.

During the root canal process, your dentist will not only remove the damaged and decayed portions of the tooth but also fill it with gutta-percha – a biocompatible solution that replaces the internal structure previously supported by the pulp. It also serves as a seal to prevent future reinfection, giving your tooth a chance to thrive as opposed to being removed and replaced.

Myth: Tooth Extraction is Easier and Better Than a Root Canal

Again, if this were true, there would be no need for dentists to even offer endodontic (root canal) treatment. The fact is that tooth extraction is only ever suggested if a tooth cannot be repaired with a root canal or any other form of restorative treatment.

After placing a dental crown over the affected tooth, it can continue to work normally and remain aesthetically beautiful – a decision that will not only save you time but also money. Tooth extraction (and replacement) requires costly investments. From the removal process to determining how to replace the missing tooth or teeth, you can expect your cost to increase quickly. A root canal, though, can remain successful for a lifetime.

Myth: Root Canals Cause Pain

It’s important to differentiate between pre- and post-procedural discomfort. The kind that occurs before your root canal stems from the infection that exists within the pulp. Once it is removed, the pain will no longer be present because its source – the pulp – is no longer present.

However, after treatment, you can expect there to be some slight soreness. Any kind of dental procedure will likely cause post-procedural discomfort, but it can be remedied with over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress.

Instead of experiencing the pain you previously reported, you’ll deal with minor achiness that shouldn’t last more than a few days.

Root canals are nothing to be afraid of; in fact, they are invaluable procedures that can change the way you live your life. Let your dentist dispel the rumors so that you can make the best decision for your oral health.
