Sometimes it’s easy to understand why you’re hurting. Whether you stub a toe, get a papercut, or bump your head on a low ceiling, certain discomfort makes sense. But when it comes to unexplained jaw pain, it can be quite alarming, especially if it only occurs on one side. But don’t panic. This type of soreness is usually not a major cause for concern. Here are a few reasons why it happens, and when you should see your dentist about it.

Toothache

A toothache can make your jaw hurt on the same side as the affected tooth. There are many possible reasons for a toothache, including:

  • Cavities
  • Abscess
  • Receding gums
  • Bite problems
  • Cracked or broken tooth
  • Exposed dentine
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)

If you believe you have any of these conditions, please contact your dentist as soon as possible for an appointment.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction

TMJ dysfunction or TMD is the second most common cause of jaw pain. TMD is not just one but a collection of conditions that can affect the temporomandibular joint of your jaw and the surrounding areas. Other conditions related to TMD include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome

If you have any of these issues, speak to your dentist about treatment for TMD. This can include a combination of therapies such as orthodontics, jaw exercises, or even custom orthotics or bite guards.

Sinus Infection (Sinusitis)

Because of the location of your maxillary sinuses, sinusitis can cause your teeth and jaw to hurt. This pain may increase when you bite or lay down. Should you experience this type of discomfort, speak to your physician or ENT about your options.

Ear Infection

If you have an ear infection, you may feel jaw soreness on the side of that ear. Be careful, however, as ear pain and TMD pain can often be confused, so if your ears are given a clean bill of health and you’re still experiencing pain, speak to your dentist about TMD.

Migraine Headache

Migraine headaches cause pulsating pain on one or both sides of your head. There is even a such thing as a facial migraine which is felt in the face. If you suffer from either of these types of headaches, speak to your doctor about treatment.

Heart Attack

One of the most common symptoms of a heart attack is feeling pain in the left arm, left shoulder, and left jaw. You may also experience:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea

You may notice jaw pain in addition to any of these symptoms, or you may only feel jaw pain, however jaw pain on your right side is not commonly associated with heart attack. If you believe you are experiencing a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

Remember, your jaw can experience discomfort for many reasons, but thankfully most of them are not life-threatening. If you notice any oral health related jaw pain, schedule an appointment with your dentist at your earliest convenience to be evaluated.
